Joaquin Arias injury: Giants infielder has appendectomy, heads to disabled list

Giants infielder Joaquin Arias was placed on the disabled list Monday following an appendectomy, according to Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News. Arias was diagnosed with appendicitis Sunday and had successful surgery late that night after playing a full game at shortstop against Los Angeles. Hitting sixth, Arias went 1 for 3 with a double off Dodgers’ ace Clayton Kershaw in the losing effort.

A 3-4 week window is given for most players recovering from an appendectomy, but the results can vary. Braves outfielder Jason Heyward was out for 25 days following his surgery earlier this year, returning May 17th after going under the knife April 22nd. However, there have been cases of shorter recoveries. Matt Holliday took nine days and Adam Dunn took just six to return to game action in the 2011 season.

Nick Noonan has been recalled to take Arias’ roster spot. This is Noonan’s third crack at the big leagues, having made the Opening Day roster but been yo-yoed since his initial demotion on June 8th. Like Arias, Noonan can play multiple infield positions.

Arias was having a decent run for a bench player, batting .319 in 73 plate appearances since June 1st. The 24-year-old Noonan has struggled in his first few cups of coffee, hitting just .212/.256/.235. Per FanGraphs, Noonan hasn’t been a liability in the field or on the basepaths, scoring positive marks in both categories. All small sample size caveats apply.

 

Angel Pagan injury update: Giants center fielder out 10-12 weeks

Giants center fielder Angel Pagan will require surgery on his hamstring, keeping him out 10-12 weeks according to manager Bruce Bochy. Pagan initially hurt his hamstring before hitting one of the most improbable walk-off home runs in recent memory, but has yet to see any action for the Giants since that game on May 25th.

The Giants will continue to wheel out a combination of Andres Torres, Gregor Blanco and Juan Perez to occupy left and center field. While not part of their pre-season plans, the respective talents of the three outfielders have covered up much of the hole left by Pagan. For example, Blanco is batting .323/.368/.444 since Pagan went down. Part of that has been Bochy’s platooning, but mostly the former non-roster invitee has just been playing out of his mind.

Health has been a big issue for the Giants over the last month, with Pagan, Pablo Sandoval, Brandon Crawford, Marco Scutaro, Joaquin Arias, Santiago Casilla and Ryan Vogelsong all missing time. Though the position players have returned, Vogey and Casilla remain out at least through the middle of July. The Giants are 12-18 since Vogelsong’s injury, dropping them to a season-high 3.5 games out of first place in the NL West. SF Giants lineup: Crawford returns, pending batting practice

Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford returns to the lineup Saturday after missing three games with a pair of sprained fingers. He sustained the injury sliding into second base during a stolen attempt on Tuesday, a 5-4 win against San Diego. The spot in the lineup is not guaranteed, as Hank Schulman reports that he could be scratched if batting practice doesn’t go well. Joaquin Arias would most likely fill in, having started the last three games at short.

Crawford will try to help the Giants stop a nasty streak. After taking the first two of the the four-game series, the Marlins have now won 9 straight games in AT&T Park. This is the longest current streak of any team against the Giants, and especially painful against a team that has lost 25 more games than it has won this season.
