Angel Pagan Contract: Blog Reaction

Angel Pagan will be a Giant for the entirety of Obama’s second term. And pretty cheap, by MLB standards. The center fielder has agreed in principal to a 4/$40 million contract that keeps him roaming the deep alleys of AT&T Park through 2016.

The contract shakes out like this: 7/9/9/10 with a $5 million bonus that alone eclipses the $4.85 million Pagan earned in 2012. That may explain this picture:

Pagan was set to hit free agency and being courted by the Philadelphia Phillies. When the Phils declined to offer a fifth year, No. 16 made the easy decision to stay in the Bay.

I love the contract. I don’t think it’s a case of World-Series-hangover-pay-everyone-like-their-heroes. With contract inflation and the price some team will pay for Michael Bourn, welcome back Angel! Here’s the reaction from the rest of the blogosphere, ranging from national writers to our very own lovable Twitter fiends.

Grant Brisbee (@mccoveychron): I’m not thrilled with the contract when looked at out of context. But in context, with Pagan being a lot more palatable than the other options on the market, it’s really good news for the San Francisco Giants base balling club… (rest of article here)

Wendy Thurm (@hangingsliders): I’d prefer 3 years, but 4/40 is MUCH more reasonable than I expected

Steve Berman (@BASportsGuy): I’d rather have Pagan at 4/$40M than B.J. Upton at the same price … wait, Upton got 5/$75M?

Julian Levine (@GiantsNirvana): 4/$40M for Angel Pagan, eh? Not thrilled, but that’s a solid deal.

Dave (@gggiants): So 2 more good years from Pagan, one mediocre year, and then DFA’d in July 2016.

Scott Willis (@BAStatsGuy): 4 years 40 million isn’t too bad. I don’t care for the 4th year but that basically pegs him as a league average player.

Rob Neyer (from SB Nation): Keep in mind, we’re talking about (again) a 31-year-old who’s played more than 123 games in a season just twice in his career, and just a year ago was essentially treated as surplus talent by the Mets. To Pagan’s and the Giants’ credit, though, he did play quite well last season. No, maybe he’s not a Gold Glove-quality center fielder. And yes, the Giants are buying into a declining market. But he’s a solid major leaguer who should help the club some over the next few years. These days, that really is worth $10 million. (rest of the article here)

And the best news, the Pagan family is rejoicing.

Windy Pagan (@windysuil): I cant stop crying!!!!! Thanks San Francisco for believed in my husband!!!

Free DVD Giveaway: Because of course you should have the Giants World Series DVD

Ways to watch the Giants World Series movie:

-Win our first contest, hang out with Daniel Zarchy. ick.

-Watch it December 2 on MLB Network. Who has deep cable? Not I!

-Win our second contest, where we are giving away three copies of the San Francisco Giants 2012 World Series DVD with the help of A+E Networks and MLB Productions

Daniel acquired three (theoretical) copies of the Blu-Ray and DVD version of the 2012 World Series Film. Here are links to what you can win:

http://shop.mlb.com/product/index.jsp?productId=16148956&cp=2366583.2498442

http://shop.mlb.com/product/index.jsp?productId=16148946&cp=1452365.2184768.

The winners can choose Blu-Ray or DVD. Not HD-DVD though, they went the way of the 8-track.

Sounds nice, yes? Here’s how you win:

Send your favorite sports movie moment to GiantsPod@gmail.com. It can be a scene, a quote, a character, or a screen capture with funny crap attached to it. Be creative. Make sure to explain why you are personally attached to this scene/quote/film and make sure it has EVERYTHING to do with sports. We don’t do politics around here. If we did, we would isolate the middle of the country and who would want to do that?

The contest runs from when your eyes read this until December 9th at midnight PT. Then Daniel and I will review the entires, argue a bit about Bull Durham vs. Major League, then select three winners. A+E/MLB will send the winners copies and you and your future progeny can all be reminded how slow Prince Fielder really was and that Buster Posey deserved all 11 of his MVPs.

Thanks guys, can’t wait to read your entries.

Free Ticket Giveaway – Let Us Give You Stuff!

The lovely folks at A&E have given us TWO, count them TWO, tickets to Tuesday’s primiere of the Official 2012 World Series Film, playing in San Francisco’s Castro Theater.

They will be showing the new World Series film, for sale here on DVD or here on Bluray. No spoilers, but I have a feeling that it’ll turn out well. I mean, Verlander’s a beast and I can’t imagine how the Giants could possibly beat him, but still. Should be fun. Wanna get that wanna get that wanna get that.

Now, they’ve given us the freedom to choose how we want to give out these tickets, which is pretty ridiculous. My first thought of course went to my empty bank account and the possibilities there, but you guys have been such amazing fans all year and deserve the tickets, so we’re going to try to do something a little creative. Giants fans are known for being pretty original and WEIRD, so let’s see just what we can get.

Herein lies the promotion:

• Give us your best idea for the 2013 San Francisco Giants motto, such as “It’s Magic Inside,” “Together We’re Giant,” or the particularly interesting “Let’s Get Back. Together.” The funnier/more original the better.

• You must be able to go to the movie on Tuesday, November 20, at 6:30 pm at the Castro Theater in San Francisco.

• Send the entry in an email to giantspod@gmail.com. Blog comments, tweets, Facebook posts, and snail mail letters left in my mailbox will not be considered.

• Send your entry by midnight on Saturday, November 17. (Sunday morning).

• As an alternative, you can send us alternative names for our podcast. We decided to run with TGaGaaCB until we thought of something else, but that was two years ago and we’ve been lazy. Help us out. Hopefully something that doesn’t sound like an adult film.

We will read the entries on our podcast this weekend and will hopefully be notifying the winners as soon as possible.

The real prize, after all, is that you get to hang out with your favorite podcaster. Thomas can’t make it, so it’s just going to be the Funny One.

We look forward to your submissions, and thank you to A+E Networks Home Entertainment/MLB Productions for the opportunity.
